Quick Questions and Answers丨How much do you know about silicone sealants?

silicone sealant

Why do silicone sealants have different surface drying times in winter and summer?

Answer: Generally, the surface dryness and curing speed of single-component room temperature curing RTV products are closely related to the ambient humidity. In winter, when the humidity and temperature are low, the sealant will be surface dry and the curing speed is slow. In summer, when the humidity is high and the temperature is high, the sealant will dry out and cure quickly.

How to achieve the best curing performance of one-component silicone sealant products?

Answer: One-component condensation curing silicone rubber products are cured using moisture in the air. When curing, from the outside to the inside, usually under the conditions of 25°C and 50% R.H., silicone can cure 2-3 mm per day, and it takes more than 3 days to achieve optimal physical properties.

How temperature resistant is silicone sealant?

Answer: Generally, the temperature range of silica gel is -40℃-200℃. The long-term use temperature is not recommended to exceed 150℃. The temperature range of special high-temperature resistant sealant such as iron red silicone is -40℃-250℃. The long-term use temperature does not exceed 180℃. . Temperature resistance is closely related to whether the colloid is completely solidified.

Why does silicone adhesive sealant have different viscosity in winter and summer?

Answer: The viscosity of the sealant will change with the temperature. In summer, the viscosity will decrease when the temperature is high. In winter, it is just the opposite, but it will be within the acceptable range.

How to increase the curing speed of silicone sealant?

Answer: When the curing thickness is greater than 6mm, it is recommended to apply sealant twice; increasing the temperature and humidity can accelerate the curing speed of the product, but the temperature should not exceed 50°C. Increasing humidity is better than increasing temperature.

If there are stains and moisture on the surface of the bonding substrate, will it affect the sealing performance?

Before applying sealant, the bonding surface needs to be fully cleaned so that the sealant can fully adhere to the bonding surface. If there is moisture or stains on the sealant surface after curing, the impact will be relatively small.
